Judith Butler
Critique, Dissent, and Violence
May 26-28. 18.30-21.00 h.
In this seminar Butler will propose to consider the possibilities of "critique" within contemporary global conditions, focusing on the ways that critique, as an academic practice, implies the possibility of political dissent. She will analyse the meaning of "critique" in light of Walter Benjamin's "Critique of Violence" and then to consider Hannah Arendt's views on dissent and civil disobedience. Both thinkers understand the political necessity of critique to emerge in the face of state violence. It will be considered how their theorizations might be translated into the present to formulate a public critique of global wars.
