New Grammars of the Political
September 26, 27
Coordinated by Universidad Nómada
A CENDEAC course conceived by Nómada University.
(This is the first part of a course structured in two sessions. The second will take place around Antonio Negri’s visit in 2009).
The course New Grammars of the Political intends to explore the unknown terrain of a contemporary political reality that is lacking in concept. At the same time, it tries to problematise the new concepts of a critical thinking that has accompanied current transformations (sometimes silent and imperceptible, other times noisy and deafening) in the production and reproduction of life, in the exercise of power and knowledge, of belonging, and of becoming other, but also in the exploitation and the resistance to power and exploitation. At the crossroads lie such categories as ‘democracy’, ‘nation’, ‘capitalism’, ‘public’, ‘biopolitics’, ‘counterpower’, ‘subject and subjectivization’, ‘representation’, ‘resolution’, ‘reform’, and ‘revolution’.
Far from taking a purely academic or sociological approach, the course The New Grammar of the Political wants to create this atmosphere of public questioning -- following on the trail of global contemporary social and political movements -- where old and new categories test their epistemic validity and acquire their ethical meaning in discursive and institutional force fields. The goal is to approach the practice of what Foucault, with intentional paradox, denominated an ‘ontology of the present’.
Each session will therefore feature contributions from researchers, philosophers and creators, whose common characteristic is the immersion of their research in the social and institutional factories of political subjectivity, where everything talked about is pursued and the practice of discourse and of social cartography have ethical and political connotations.
This first part of the course (September 2008) will be divided into three sessions, in the format of round-table discussions.
(1) Suburbs, postcolonial metropolis and biopolitical conflicts
Sandro Mezzadra
Nirmal Puwar
(2) The becoming-woman of politics and production
Rutvica Andrijasevic
Christian Marazzi
(3) Capital/work or capital/life?
Antonella Corsani
Maurizio Lazzarato
The three round-table discussions and the rest of the seminar will be chaired by members of the Universidad Nómada.
