THIS SEMINAR HAS BEEN POSTPONED
Jean-Luc Nancy
Art, Infinity, Too Much
With the collaboration of the French Embassy in Spain
Jean-Luc Nancy is one of the most consistent and ambitious figures currently working in philosophy. With over fifty published volumes, he has covered an extremely wide field of topics, a range that makes his work resistant to being categorised under specific “themes” or currents. He has produced influential readings of thinkers that go from Hegel or Nietzsche to his contemporaries, like Derrida o Blanchot. One of his most recurrent concerns is the possibility of forging communities without reference to any excluding unity or totality, a problem that he addresses most directly in An Inoperative Community (University of Minnesota Press, 01) and La comparution (written with Jean-Christophe Bailly, Bourgois, 07), but reappears in a great deal of his work.
Moreover, his search for non systematized modes of thinking, which is presented as a demand in L'oubli de la philosophie (Galilée, 1986), has led him to return to art as a kind of material and sensuous relation to the world that is intrinsically problematic and hence, unavoidable, for philosophy. From an early work dedicated to early German Romanticism The literary absolute (SUNY Press, 88) written with Philippe Lacoue-Labarthe, Nancy has returned to the subject of art in works such as The Muses I and Multiple Arts: The Muses II (Strandford University Press, 97 and 06), Le regard du portrait (Galilée, 01) and The Ground of the Image (Fordham University Press, 05).
During the seminar that he will lead at CENDEAC – Art, Infinity, Too Much Nancy will take up some of the topics that he has been working with in two recent publications constructed around two exhibitions: Trop (Galería de la Université du Québec à Montréal, 2005) and Le plaisir au dessin (Musée des Beaux-Arts Lyon and Hazan, 2007).
Biography
Jean-Luc Nancy was Professor of Philosophy at the Université Marc Bloch in Strasbourg until his retirement in 2002. In 1980, alongside Philippe Lacoue-Labarthe, he founded the influential Centre de Recherches Philosophiques sur la Politique in Paris. He has lectured widely in several universities in Europe and North America and has cemented a place as one of the most influential thinkers of his generation. Asides from his written work, Nancy has often collaborated with artists, filmmakers and museum curators.
