The Spaces of Cinema: From the Fair to the Museum
Coordination Francisco Baena
24/25/26 March
6:30- 9 p.m.
In the last few years, a new film genre appears to be asserting itself, something that has been variously called “expanded cinema”, “exhibition film”, “museum cinema”, “almost cinema”, etc. It signals a shift in the sites for the reception of cinematic practices: from the black box to the white cube. However, this tendency remains critically underexamined. There is a need to think about the implications of this shift in distribution channels. These would have to take into account the historical legacy of video and, before that, of avant-garde and experimental cinema while inscribing itself in a wider history that attends to the construction of specific forms of spectatorship.
This seminar will try to identify different topologies of the image-time, several spatial configurations within which that image-time has taken place. This is done through film analysis in order to take into account the different subjectivities each one of them has produced.
Generally speaking, we could detect four different topological variants:
– a primitive mode of representation related to the carnivalesque model.
– a classical order of representation related to the Italian style stage model.
– television related to the phantom scene.
– and “expanded cinema” heir to avant-garde experimentation.
Jesús González Requena will develop the first three while Juan Zapater will focus on the fourth.
