27/05/2009 – 28/05/2009
1st Encounter of the Working Groupu the Public Sphere (El/lo público)
May 27/28. 7.00-9.00 p.m
John Michael Roberts’ visit will be the first encounter of the working group on the
public sphere (“El / Lo público”), with an invited speaker. However, attendance to this lecture is open to all and those who have not -or not yet- joined the group, are encouraged to attend. During two days, we will explore the concept of public sphere as well as its contemporary currency. During the first session, John Michael Roberts will talk about the relationship between popular culture and the public sphere, paying particular attention to some of key elements such as demonstrations, political activism, and forms in which free speech is legislated and controlled. In view of all of these, he will attempt to mobilise the history of this concept from the standpoint of the present. The meeting on the 28th will be an opportunity to openly discuss all the issues raised the previous day, it will be moderated by members of the working group.
